Mary Bittlebrun (née Cully; 19 March 1864 – 6 August 1976) was a validated American supercentenarian.
Biography[]
Mary Bittlebrun was born in Bloomington, Illinois, USA, on 19 March 1864. Her parents were Patrick and Alice Cahill Cully. She was one of 11 children. In 1876, the family moved to Nebraska. She worked as a teacher until 1902 and then became a homsteader in South Dakota and Nebraska. She married Peter Bittlebrun in 1906 when she was 42 years old. They entered the cattle business together. Their only child, Alice, died at the age of 17 due to pneumonia.
In 1920, the couple moved to Mena, Arkansas. Bittlebrun became a widow in 1954/1955 when her husband died at the age of 96. Then she moved in with ther niece's family in Dallas. She moved to a nursing home back in Arkansas when she was 101 years old.
During her spare time, she liked to read books, watch television and go to church. She never smoked or drank alcohol, which might have contributed to her long life. She claimed it to be God's will. On the occasion of her 103rd birthday, she stated that she doesn't worry about her age.
Bittlebrun died, in Arkansas, on 6 August 1976, at the age of 112 years, 140 days. At the time of her death, she was the 2nd-oldest verified living person in the world, behind Niwa Kawamoto. She was also the oldest living American, and the last living American to have been born during the presidency and life of Abraham Lincoln as well as the last known validated living American to have been alive during the civil war.
